Star lay down on her stomach in the sand, using her hands to prop her face up, the waves carresed her back as they rolled into the surf. The moon was shinning on her wet hair making it look midnight black. Her green eyes lay closed she sat enjoying basking in the moonlight, her blue fin blended nicly into the water making it look as though it were only part of the waves when it came up out of the water.

Mermaids rarely got to go above water, even to see the sun or the moon in a clear view, unblurred by the constantly shifting water. Especially those of her age, the teenagers. Star herself was 17 but loved the air, that was afterall the magic element that coursed through her vains, but she had the skinking feeling that she should stay in the water in case any land walkers saw her in her mermaid form.

But the real reason star was above the shore was because she had been a couple times and each time a baby unicorn had dared to venture over to the water to see the mermaid. Star had been thrilled, and from the looks of it the creature had no family, she wished so much to take care of it, but sometimes it got shy. Star lay thinking about the unicorn, its white furr and light pink main that looked as though it had been made by the stars themselves. The two had a magical connection and she could feel it, she lay now on her back letting the water cover her face occasionally looking at the stars that seemed to twinkle more than usual.

Suddinly star could hear shuffling in the sands, is it the unicorn? She thought, but the shadow that fell over her body was that of a human male. Stars emerald eyes went wide with fear.

In the distance, a tarnished red coated wolf sat on the sandy shore. The wolf's eyes glowed in the starry night. She turned her head to gawk at the waves, which rolled up her back. It was completely silent, except for the crashing of the waves and a few dogs. Shaking her furry head, she stood up to walk more. Why am I here? It is so wet, so cold! The wolf growled as a dog stalked near her. The dog growled back. Suddenly, she was surrounded by three hounds.
When does an old wolf stalk the Palanen Ocean at this time of night? asked one of the hounds. The others gave a bark of laughter and started howling at the moon.
Back off, you domestic freaks, growled the female wolf angerily.
WHO YAH CALLING 'DOMESTIC FREAKS'! barked a chocolate brown hound. The wolf growled and lunged at him, tearing a large chunk of his ear off. The hounds backed away, then turned and ripped through the beach at an alarming speed.
Beat it, freaks. Nobody dares to taunt me, she called, a younger streak lighted. The excitment disappeared as quickly as it came. She sighed, enjoying a little fight once in a while.

Turning back, she walked a bit more, the waves laping at her feet. She fell to a halt when she spotted a man in the distance. He was young and looked a bit drunk. The wolf zipped up to him, her red coat blazing like a fire in the man's torch-light. They stared at each other silently. The wolf urged a human thought up to the surface of her mind. Suddenly, a woman with fire-red hair and silver streaks stood before the man. The man gazed at her in drunken fright. She stared silently back at him. They stood like that for a couple of minutes, before the man turned and ran. Langv, now back to an orderly human state, smiled as the light disappeared. She like frightening people right now, though she knew it was mean. It gave her confidence that she could beat up the next intruder she saw. It gave her confidence that she could protect the ones she liked. Langv, if you keep this up, you'll never find once you would like. The 41 year old shook that thought away, but it slowly dripped back into her mind. You've lived 41 years and you know better than the gods that the world works that way. Langv scoffed and turned back into a wolf. There was nothing to a wolf but protect, survive, and live while you can, or at least Langv thought that way. She stood there, sitting with her head up to the moon, not noticing a young girl, who looked like she was a spirit of the ocean, laying feet away from her.
