Title: Clockwork

Well golems exist in Arda, as does a half-golem character xD so I was thinking about golems, which goes to DnD, which then brings me to clockwork devices. Now, technology doesn't really exist at primitive gunpowder level and beyond. So that gets rid of any odd Victorian-like clockwork devices from existing. However maybe they are similar to golems? In being simply complex mechanical golems powered by different sources of magic?

The clockwork devices could range from whole golems to simple little devices, the only thing is that they all incorporate forged metals, whirling parts and a magical energy source of some sort.

The most common form would most likely be some form of stone that mage's could imbue with a limited charge, insert this stone into a socket and it provides juice like a battery. Soon enough, depending on it's sueage, you'll need to replace it with a new stone.

More rare pieces, or untrustworthy, could be powered by bound spirits and elementals. Obviously they'd rail against being confined in such an unnatural object, but if successfully dominated they could react with a life of their own, and thereby keep their wielder alive. Or with elementals give them some form of magical attacks based on their element.

Things like whole arms could replace missing limbs, incorporating a variety of gadgets and weapons to boot. However the more complex and useful a clockwork device is, the more likely you'll need to buy replacement parts or magical fuel to keep it going.

Just an idea I wanted to throw out there xD

I wonder why I didn't reply to this topic before. Anyhow. Anything mildly mechanical in nature makes me uncomfortable, it really isn't what I want for Arda even if it is changed around to be more magical than electronic. I think that at this point, I will have to say that there won't be any clockwork creatures in Arda. Sorry, Alice!
